Summer SPARK Updates – West Hartford Public Schools

Welcome to the SPARK Summer Program! The West Hartford program will take place from June 26 – July 14. Watch this space for updates!

Week 3:

July 13, 2017

  • Thank you so much for joining us for Open House this morning!  We hope you enjoyed our activities and the time with your child at SPARK!  Tomorrow is our last day.  We will be sending home journals with your mathematician.  Thank you for your support during these wonderful three weeks!  Enjoy the rest of your summer – see you at the end of August!   The Spark Teachers

July 12, 2017

  • Ms. McKenna and Mrs. Masters: We explored lines of symmetry using mirrors, and we even drew our own symmetrical figures!
  • Ms. Shewokis: We talked about congruent shapes and played a game to practice identifying them!
  • Mrs. Kropp: We composed new shapes using tangrams and added to our playground designs from yesterday!

July 11, 2017

  • Mrs. Masters’, Ms. Shewokis’ and Ms. McKenna’s classes:  We learned about congruent shapes and how to compare different characters of shapes using a Carroll Diagram.
  • Mrs. Kropp’s class:  We continued to stamp 3-D shape faces and constructed our floor plans for a playground using 3-D shapes.

July 10, 2017

  • Mrs. Masters, Ms. Shewokis, Ms. McKenna: Unit 2 check-up that focused on shape attributes and classifying them by their attributes in a variety of ways.
  • Mrs. Kropp: We talked about our awesome 3-D bubble shapes from Friday and began to design a scale model of a playground using tangram shapes.

Week 2:

July 7, 2017

  • Ms. Shewokis’ Class: We were introduced to acute and obtuse angles. We even created a tool to find these angles in shapes and around our world.
  • Ms. McKenna and Mrs. Masters’ Classes: We learned a new game called “What Happened?” We did a Unit 1 check-up to see how the children are progressing.
  • Mrs. Kropp’s Class: We created tessellations using one geometric shape and had to track the transformation of a shape by telling if it slid, turned, or flipped.

July 6, 2017

  • Ms. Shewokis, Ms. McKenna, and Mrs. Masters’s classes sorted shapes by their attributes and played a game called “One Loop Puzzle”.
  • Mrs. Kropp’s class built two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes out of straws and pipe cleaners. Ask your child what shapes he/she built.

July 5, 2017

  • Mrs. Masters’/Ms. McKenna’s/Ms. Shewokis’ Classes: We all discussed attributes of shapes and how an angle is a characteristic to identify a shape. Ask your child what a right angle, obtuse, and acute angle is.
  • Mrs. Kropp’s Class: We identified patterns in a tessellation. Ask your child what a tessellation is and see if they can find the basic pattern around home!

July 3, 2017

Week 1:

June 29, 2017

Hello Spark Families!

We had a wonderful 4th day of Spark Summer School!

Mrs. Masters’, Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes – We learned a new game called Grupo.  This game helps us to discuss attributes of shapes.  We classified shapes by their sides and vertices.  We also designed new shapes out of rectangles, squares, and triangles.  We can’t wait to play again tomorrow!

Mrs. Kropp’s class – We used congruent shapes to create new shapes.  We found the lines of symmetry in these new shapes.  Ask your child what is interesting about a square and a rectangle.

Have a super afternoon!

Hello Spark Families!

Our third day was busy and productive!

Mrs. Masters’, Ms. Shewokis’, and Ms. Mckenna’s classes – We made shapes out of squares and used those shapes to create larger shapes.  Ask your child what a vertex is!

Mrs. Kropp’s class – We continued with our symmetry work.  We found the lines of symmetry of a square and cut along those lines to make triangles.  We then used those triangles to make designs.

Thank you for continuing to send in media release forms.  We’ll send home new blank ones if you haven’t returned one by the end of the week.  Please try to be here by 8:45 every morning as we go to our classrooms together at that time.

Have a great afternoon!

Hi Families!

Another great day at SPARK Summer School! Here’s what we did today:

Mrs. Kropp’s Class: We tested and drew lines of symmetry with mirrors.

Mrs. Masters’/Ms. McKenna’s/Ms. Shewokis’ Classes: We discussed shape attributes and discovered that shapes are defined by their number of sides and vertices. Ask your child about the game we played called “Lingo.”

Here are a few reminders:

*Please return the Media Release form by this Friday. If you need another copy, please let us know.

*Arrival is at 8:45. Dismissal is at 11:30. Please be prompt.

Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!

June 26, 2017 – Day 1!

Here is what we did on our first day together:

*We were introduced to our mathematician friends who gave us a special job! All throughout SPARK, we are helping them test math games and explore geometrical patterns. Ask your child who these special friends are.

Here are a few reminders:

*Please have students come in every day wearing their SPARK name tags. This helps with dismissal organization and there are other programs at the school.

*If there is a change in dismissal, please provide a written note for that day and have your child give it to their teacher.

*Please be patient with bus routes these first few days as they find their way. Bus 5 was late this morning and Bus 2 left late this afternoon.

We look forward to a fabulous day tomorrow!
