Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We created game cards for a fantastic matching game called “Memory Twist!” We also learned a new game called “Make a Trio.”
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We played a game called “Izit?” where students have to create balanced number equations based on certain number directions and mathematical rules.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Thursday, June 28 | We continued building structures with different shapes. Students also tried guessing shapes using feely bags and made shape face prints with Play-Doh. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We explored the hundreds chart and practiced skip counting by tens from any number and practiced skip counting by fives up to 200. This is preparing them to play Zani’s Mystery Number Puzzles.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We reviewed what an equation and expression are and also discussed the value of digits in numbers. They played the “Izit?” game to make true/false equations and a “Break it up” game that looks at relationships between numbers in order to add.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Friday, June 29 | We played an “I Spy” game and continued our use of mathematical vocabulary to describe the object to our partner to guess. Students had time to work in “space lab” shape centers. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We reviewed skip counting by 10’s from any number. We also compared numbers using new math vocabulary. This led to playing Imi and Zani’s Mystery Number Puzzles using different clues.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We played “Break it up” where students see an addition equation in a new way, suing relational thinking. We compared two expression and are finding the missing addends.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Monday, July 2 | We met Farley, our “Frogonaut”, who is getting ready to leave for a space lab. We are teaching him shape names and position words. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We discussed strategies for a game called “Make 50” where students have to place 3 numbers in the correct place in order to reach the target of 50. We also learned the meanings of the words ‘digits’, ‘sum’, and ‘difference’.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We learned the words ‘subtrahend’, ‘minuend’, and ‘difference’ in order to understand balanced and equal subtraction problems. We are noticing patterns and relationships among our equations and numbers.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Tuesday, July 3 | We continued to work on our direction words with a game called, ‘Farley Says” and a partner game “Where’s Freeda?” |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We played a new version of Imi and Zani’s “Make 50” game, called, “Make 100.” It was challenging to add such large numbers! Then, we learned how to estimate numbers to the nearest ten and find numbers on an open number line.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We continued to balance equations and are learning the game “Equal Expressions.”
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Thursday, July 5 | We spent our time together reinforcing the concepts of right and left by telling Farley how to locate a shape that was hidden in the classroom. We also introduced some new space labs that helped to review directional words. Try playing the “Hokey Pokey” at home with your scholar. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We reviewed how to estimate numbers to the closest ten, and then applied this learning to estimating two digit by two digit sums. We then played a game called “The Target Game” where students tried to reach a target number by placing four digit cards in the correct place.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We created expressions to make them equal. We used multiples of ten to make it easier to compute mentally.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Friday, July 6 | We played two fun Lily Pad Pond games – one giant one on the floor and one in partners – where we had to use our direction words to move. We are getting really good with right and left! Practice this weekend! |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We played Version 1 of The Target Game with a partner. We then discussed strategies for adding two digit numbers with regrouping in order to figure out how close we were to our target number. We finished the day by writing a letter to Imi and Zani about the strategies we used in The Target Game and Make 50.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We used bar models to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students used variables (letters) in expressions and equations.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Monday, July 9 | We began our work with 2D shapes and tangrams. We did a scavenger hunt and worked on identifying the attributes of the tangram shapes. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class |
We reviewed all of our math games in stations and played Target Number by using clues that helped students to understand greater than/less than with the 100s chart. Tomorrow we start work with odd and even numbers.
|
|
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | We are preparing for our final activities by solving word problems with missing variables.
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Tuesday, July 10 | We explored tangrams by flipping, turning, and twisting 2-D shapes. We read a story called Grandfather Tang’s Story which reinforced these skills. |
Ms. Suscewicz’s class | We played a new math game called “Are there leftovers?”. We then examined why even numbers and odd numbers are different. We read a book called One Odd Day. We also explored new vocabulary meanings in our glossary.
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes |
Today we solved money word problems that involved addition, subtraction, and giving change. Students are solving these using mental strategies. This will prepare us for our final activities on Friday.
|
|
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Wednesday, June 11 |
We continued to explore tangrams. We used the seven shapes to try and fit them into a larger shape. We used math words like “match”, “flip”, and “turn” to explain our strategy of solving the shape puzzle.
|
Ms. Suscewicz’s class |
We practiced sorting numbers using Carroll Diagrams. We placed numbers in the diagram based on certain criteria such as: even, odd, greater than, less than.
|
|
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes |
We reviewed some of our favorite games like, “Izit?”, “Equal Expressions”, and “Break it up” to reinforce common skills learned throughout this unit.
|
|
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Thursday, June 12 |
We learned a game called “Look, Make, and Fix,” where students had to look at a geometric design and then make it with tangrams without looking. They then could look again and fix their work. We are strengthening our memory!
|
Ms. Suscewicz’s class |
We created our own Carroll diagrams by choosing four labels and placing digit cards under the correct labels. We are finishing our Spark time together by looking at one and two loop puzzles.
|
|
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes |
We are preparing for our Bazaar tomorrow. Students will be shopkeepers and buyers and will be purchasing and making change with money called Mula.
|
|
Mrs. Masters’s/Mrs. Kropp’s class | Friday, June 13 |
Students completed the unit assessment.
|
Ms. Suscewicz’s class |
Students played a One Loop game, working in teams to determine the rule for which numbers belong in the circle and which belong outside of the circle.
|
|
Ms. McKenna’s and Ms. Shewokis’ classes | Students participated in our Bazaar today. |
